The Institute of Marine Biotechnology and Bio-resource Utilization relies on the Department of Marine Biology and the first-level discipline doctoral program of marine science, focusing on marine biotechnology and the sustainable use of marine biological resources, to meet the demand of the national marine development strategy andJiangsu marine economic development. Main focuses of research are marine biotechnology and resource utilization with obvious regional characteristics. At the same time, it will also integrate scientific research and human resources within the school to promote exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign research institutions, aiming to cultivate senior professional and technical personnel with the capability of teaching, scientific research and industrialization of marine biology.

    1. Strong scientific research strength

The Institute of Marine Biotechnology and Bio-resource Utilization currently has 12 staffs, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, and 7 lecturers. The institute has nearly 20 instruments and equipment such as flow cytometers, inverted fluorescence microscopes, high performance liquid chromatographs, full-band multi-functional microplate readers, and fluorescent quantitative PCR machines.

The institute has undertaken key research projects and 24 scientific research achievements at or above the provincial level, including 2 National Key Research and Development Projects, 1 National Natural Science Foundation Youth Science Fund Project, 6 Jiangsu Natural Science Foundation projects, 15other provincial and ministerial funds  projects, 2 Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Projects of Jiangsu Province, and one person is selected as the Deputy General Science and Technology Project of Jiangsu Province.

    2. Abundant research directions

The institute focuses on the combination of scientific research and practice, and the combination of production-learning-research, focusing on marine biotechnology, marine biogenetics and immunology, marine biomineralization, marine microbial pathogenic mechanisms, and the development and utilization of marine natural products. The main research interests are as follows:

The mechanism of adversity resistance and environmental adaptability of characteristic offshore fishes: Under the background of global climate change and the impact of human activities, the characteristic fishes in the coastal waters of Jiangsu (the Yangtze River estuary) are taken as the research object, and the genetics of marine organisms’ disease resistance, stress resistance and other traits are explored through comprehensive ecological, physiological and genetic analysis, revealing its environmental adaptability mechanism.

Material transformation and pathogenic process of marine microorganisms: Under the influence of ocean warming and increased anthropogenic pollution, modern molecular biology techniques are used to study the role of marine microorganisms in the transfer and transformation of naturaland pollutantelements such as nitrogen and phosphorus; to explorethe impact of environmental changes on the genome variation, survival and pathogenicity of marine pathogenic microorganisms such as Vibrio.

Sustainable utilization of marine biological resources: Under the strategic situation of the transformation of the marine economic development mode, centering on characteristic marine biological resources of Jiangsu coastal zone, we carry out research on the utilization of active substances derived from marine animal, plant and microorganisms, and develop marine biological green functional products with independent intellectual property rights, including health foods and marine drugs, etc.

Development and utilization of marine natural products: Use the unique ecological environment of the ocean to find novel natural products, use chromatographic techniques to separate and purify compounds, and then conduct material activity studies through chemical modification and biosynthesis, to find efficient products and optimal synthetic paths.

    3. Jiangsu Branch of National Engineering Research Center of Biological Feed

In order to promote the development of the biological feed industry in Jiangsu, we focus on the aquiculture and other livestock species to improve the level of aquatic feed, livestock and poultry feed technology. Jiangsu Changshou Group Nanshan Biological Technology Co., Ltd. formally cooperated with the National Engineering Research Center of Biological Feed, the College of Oceanography of Hohai University andInstitute ofJiangsu Freshwater Fisheries Research to establish the Jiangsu branch of the National Engineering Research Center of Biological Feed. Professor Zhe Zhao of the College of Oceanography of Hohai University was appointed as the director, and Director Jianlin Pan of the Jiangsu Provincial Freshwater Fisheries Research Institute, Ping Gu, chairman of Jiangsu Changshou Group Nanshan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., served as deputy director.
