Department of Marine Biology (DMB) is one of three departments in College of Oceanography since its establishment in Hohai University in September 2015. DMB divides into two institutes, Institute of Marine Ecology and Environment and Institute of Marine Biotechnology and Resource Utilization and four research platforms, marine biotechnology, utilization of marine living resources, marine ecological protection, and marine environmental pollution and its ecological effects. Basic and applied researches are performed in the fields of coastal and estuarine environment protection, marine life physiology, marine life-environment interaction, sustainable utilization of marine living resources and fishery. In May 2020, the National Engineering Research Center of Biological Feed established the Jiangsu Branch in collaboration with DMB. Most DMB faculty are also part of Key Laboratory of Marine Hazards Forecasting, a joint lab by Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources and Hohai University. In the last years, the new DMB has received more than ¥10 million national and provincial research funds, and published over 40 high-quality research papers.

Advised by Academician Jianfang Gui, DMB has built a young and innovative faculty team led by provincial outstanding talents, and a complete education system of undergraduate, and master and doctor postgraduates, as well as a post-doctoral research center in Marine Science. Currently, DMB has 22 full-time faculty members, including two professors, five associate professors, 14 lecturers and one postdoctoral fellow. All faculty members hold doctoral degrees, in which 13 have overseas study experiences, five graduate from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and seven graduate from the Top 200 universities in the world.

College of Oceanography and DMB constructed a 2200 m2 Marine Science Research Center, which is equiped with nutrient analyzer, flow cytometer, algal chlorophyll fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared, multifunctional enzyme marker of full-wavelength, fluorescent inverted microscope, gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer, accelerated solvent extractor and some other research facilities. Besides the aforementioned four research platforms, the Marine Science Research Center supports undergraduate labs including Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Marine Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Marine Chemistry, etc.

In addition to lectures, DMB’s undergraduate education puts great emphasis on lab work and practical studies. Three key processes are crucial to the DMB undergraduates: in-class learning, extracurricular practice and basin research training. DMB encourages undergraduates to conduct simple research projects in one of the labs and has supported 15 undergraduate research projects, which include at least one national key project per year.

DMB has invited Jianfang Gui, David Montagne, Kiyoshi Soyano, Young-Don Lee and many other scientists to give research talks. DMB faculty are also active in organizing and attending research conferences and seminars. DMB morivates and supports young faculties to visit top international marine institutes and conduct collaborative research.

DMB sincerely looks forward to communication, cooperation and visits of a broader community of scientists and warmly welcomes students from all over the world to study here.
